Poland plans to strengthen border with Russia
In the spring of 2025, Poland will start work on an 'Eastern Shield', a strengthening of its border with Russia and Belarus.
The work on Poland's (and therefore NATO's) eastern border will cost 10 billion zloty, some 2.3 billion euro. That money will mainly go towards building a new defence line with anti-tank trenches, shelters and landmine emplacement capabilities. There will also be investment in anti-drone technology and communication systems.
Part of the investments will be paid for with European Union support. According to Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland's defence minister, this is the largest investment to strengthen Poland's (and NATO's) eastern border since the end of World War II.
Poland plays an important role in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia: most of the arms supplied by the West to Ukraine pass through Poland to Ukraine.
Work on the Eastern Shield should be completed by 2028.
