“For Putin, this war is existential”

General Michel Yakovleff, former vice-chief of staff of NATO's Shape, was invited on the French news channel LCI, where he shared his expertise and outspokenness on the latest developments in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

For the general, the Russians' hyper-aggressiveness has been underestimated:

“The Europeans haven't understood, but the Baltic states know exactly what's going on. For Putin, this war is existential. It's a war he's waging for his regime, for his history, for his place in history. So he may be tempted by a nuclear adventure. It's unlikely, but he could also focus on extremely vicious actions.”

For the specialist and LCI consultant, the end of this war is linked to one and only one person:

“We haven't understood that the only way to stop this war is to stop Putin, and for that we need to make a gesture, a decisive action.”
