Germany ready to send troops to Ukraine: “We'll play a role” (B.Pistorius)

On Saturday, January 18, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said he was prepared to send German soldiers to Ukraine.

Such a deployment could take place if a demilitarized zone (a buffer zone) were to be established in order to guarantee compliance with a hypothetical ceasefire between the two warring countries. “We're NATO's biggest partner in Europe. It's obvious that we'll play a role and that we'll have to take responsibility for it,” declared Pistorius. A question which, according to him, “will be discussed when the time comes”.

In an interview with the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Defense Minister also spoke out in favor of a defense budget (within the NATO framework) of 3% of GDP. Donald Trump, for his part, is demanding 5% for NATO member countries.

Meanwhile, Friedrich Merz, who is considered the favorite to become Germany's next chancellor, believes that the new American president will bring more “clarity” to relations between Americans and Europeans, and that his return to the White House will offer the latter the “opportunity” to accelerate and intensify their joint efforts, particularly in the military sphere.
