Fantastic African teacher taught his students Microsoft Word without a computer
Richard Appiah Akoto, a teacher from Ghana, is garnering international praise for teaching his students to use Microsoft Word in a most unusual way. After all, he was not using a computer!
A couple of years ago, images of the teacher drawing detailed screenshots of Microsoft Word on a blackboard went viral. Teaching Word in this subject matter is obviously not ideal, but his innovative approach allowed his students to fully learn how to use the software program. Eventually, Akoto's method caught the attention of Microsoft, which then decided to offer the school financial and technical support.
"I wanted to teach them to use Microsoft Word. But I didn't have a computer to show them everything. I had to do my best," he says. "So I decided to use chalk to draw what the screen looks like on the board." Akoto also said he drew monitors, system units and keyboards.
Akoto taught for about eight years at Betenase Municipal Assembly Junior High in Sekyedomase, Ghana. In 2018, he decided to post photos of his Microsoft Word sketches on Facebook. Microsoft was so impressed with Akoto's work that it invited him to participate in the Microsoft Educator Exchange 2018 in Singapore. It was the first time Akoto left Ghana. There he met education leaders from around the world and he shared the challenges of Ghana's education system with the whole world.
An impressive display of creativity and perseverance!
