Couple divorces and remarries 12 times
An Austrian couple is on trial for pension fraud. Alarm bells went off when the husband and wife divorced and remarried no less than 12 times over the past 40 years. And they did so for financial reasons.
Between 1982 and 2022, the two allegedly secured over 326,000 euros with their “blinkered marriages.” The woman from Graz received a widow's pension after her husband's death, but when she remarried she lost that pension again. But in accordance with Austrian law, she did receive a sort of “severance pay” of some 27,000 euros as compensation. And that inspired the Austrian couple to divorce and remarry again on average every 3 years for four decades in order to pocket this compensation each time.
The couple is now charged with fraud and will soon have to answer in court for their years of fraud.
