Trump and his far-fetched idea: “Canada as the 51st U.S. state”
According to Radio Canada, Trump has raised the possibility of Canada becoming the 51st US state. The idea was first raised in a humorous tone during an evening with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Today, the tone has changed. The idea is now a real project.
In an interview with NBC, the next tenant of the White House confided that not only Mexico but also Canada could become part of the United States, in response to the trade challenges facing Washington and the two nations. According to many observers, this proposal would be completely “far-fetched”.
Facing up to trade challenges
Recently, Donald Trump published a rather evocative message on his Social Truth platform. In it, he referred to the Canadian Prime Minister as “the governor of the great state of Canada”. Speculation is therefore rife. At the same time, the American businessman reaffirmed his willingness to discuss tariffs with the Canadian leader, reports 20 Minutes. He also stressed that these measures would have incredible repercussions for both the United States and Canada.
On the Canadian side, skepticism is taking over. Canada's Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, assured us that her government was resolutely committed to defending the national interest, and would remain so.
