Trump and France's First Lady: Remark doesn't go down well
The new president-elect will be in Paris on Saturday for the reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral. He had already visited the French capital in 2017, and had not failed to shock Brigitte Macron.
Back then, the Republican businessman had spent two days in France, alongside his wife Melania. For the occasion, he attended the July 14th parade on the Champs-Elysées and visited the Invalides.
During his trip, he approached the First Lady and complimented her: “You're in such good shape”. He then turned to Emmanuel Macron and added: “Très belle”.
While the remark went unnoticed in France, it caused quite a stir on the other side of the Atlantic. Indeed, many pointed out that Donald Trump was explicitly referring to Brigitte Macron's age; a surprising reaction given that the age difference between the French president and his wife is the same as that between Trump and Melania.
During his first term in office, Trump had already been heavily criticized for his disparaging remarks about women, and in particular their physique.
