Syrian rebels burn the tomb of Bashar al-Assad's father
Syrian rebels have destroyed the tomb of Bashar al-Assad’s father, Hafez al-Assad, in his hometown.
Verified videos obtained by the BBC show men chanting as they walk around a burning mausoleum in the town of Qardaha, located in northwestern Syria.
Last weekend, rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham recaptured the country's capital, Damascus, while Bashar al-Assad fled the country after 24 years in power. He and his family have reportedly been granted asylum in Russia.
Statues of Bashar al-Assad and his father have been torn down across the country following the ousting of the former president.
In 2011, Bashar al-Assad violently suppressed a peaceful pro-democracy protest, igniting a civil war that led to the deaths of 500,000 people and forced more than 12 million families to flee their homes.
