Syria no longer a threat to the world, claims new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa
Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has said that the country is exhausted by war and no longer poses a threat to the world.
The regime of Bashar al-Assad was overthrown two weeks ago by the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) following a swift offensive. The new Syrian leader has since called on Western nations to lift sanctions imposed on the country.
"Now, after all that has happened, sanctions must be lifted because they were targeted at the old regime. The victim and the oppressor should not be treated in the same way," he said during an interview with the BBC in Damascus.
Ahmed al-Sharaa also urged that his group no longer be classified as a terrorist organization, HTS being initially a branch of al-Qaeda.
He argued that his group has never targeted civilians and that they themselves were victims of the previous regime’s oppression.
Ahmed al-Sharaa added that a committee will be tasked with writing a constitution and that "any ruler or president will have to follow the law."
