South Korean president banned from leaving the country following martial law backlash
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been barred from leaving the country following his failed attempt to impose martial law.
On December 3, Yoon Suk Yeol announced the implementation of martial law in the Asian nation, only to retract the decision a few hours later. After this aborted attempt, South Korean lawmakers voted on a motion to oust him, but the effort fell short.
Despite this, the president is now prohibited from traveling abroad, according to an immigration official from the Ministry of Justice.
During a parliamentary hearing on Monday, a lawmaker inquired whether Yoon had been officially ordered not to leave the country. Bae Sang-up, an immigration official from the Justice Ministry, confirmed, saying, "Yes."
Although the initial impeachment motion failed, opposition lawmakers have vowed to introduce a second one by the end of the week.
