Romania suspends presidential elections amid Russian interference concerns
Romania's Constitutional Court annulled the country's presidential elections on Friday, following warnings from local authorities about potential Russian interference.
The decision by Eastern Europe's highest judicial authority has plunged the nation into chaos, coming just two weeks after the far-right candidate unexpectedly won the first round of voting.
Călin Georgescu, the far-right contender, benefited from a Kremlin-backed TikTok campaign, similar to the interference seen during Moldova's presidential elections earlier this year, according to declassified Romanian intelligence documents.
The files detail instances of "aggressive hybrid attacks", an argument bolstered by support from the United States.
With the second round of voting originally scheduled for this Sunday, the government now faces the task of setting a new election timetable.
In a video statement, Călin Georgescu condemned what he called a "formalized coup" while thanking his supporters.
