Romania: Far-right loses to pro-Europeans

The results of Romania's parliamentary elections are in. Despite a dazzling and unexpected breakthrough by the far-right in the first round, the majority in parliament will be social-democratic.

In the first round of the Romanian parliamentary elections, the far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, who was very skilful on social media networks, surprised everyone with his victory by a large number of votes. But lacking an absolute majority, he had to go through a second round. The verdict is in: the pro-Europeans retained control of Parliament, led by the PSD with 23.5% of the vote. In the game of alliances, all the far-right parties should remain in opposition.

One third of the vote

The various nationalist parties opposed to aid for Ukraine and to European policy won 30% of the vote. Romania will therefore enter a tense period with a parliament that will have to play the national unity card between the social democrats, liberals and centrists to counter the populist and ultranationalist movements.
