Putin at swearing-in ceremony: “I swear to respect human rights”

Vladimir Putin (71) was sworn in as president of Russia on Tuesday. It is the start of his fifth six-year term at the head of the Kremlin.

Putin emphasized in his speech that Russians as a “great and united people” would emerge stronger from this “difficult period” together. “Together we overcome these obstacles (...), together we will overcome,” said the 71-year-old Russian politician.

In addition, Putin also made a striking promise: "I swear (...) to respect and protect human rights and civil liberties and to respect and protect the Constitution, sovereignty, independence, security and integrity of the government." This is what the AFP news agency reports.

Putin also said that it was a great honor and responsibility, and “a sacred duty,” to lead Russia.
