Panicked Putin fears coup is nearing
Vladimir Putin is bracing for a potential coup in the Abkhazia region, located in Georgia but under Russian control, following last week’s storming of the local parliament in Sokhumi by protesters.
The demonstrators breached the parliament building to disrupt debates over a controversial law aimed at facilitating Russian investments in the region. The discussions were suspended, and protesters called for the resignation of the current government.
Abkhazia has been under Russian occupation since 2008 and hosts military bases tied to Vladimir Putin’s forces.
The protests, which began on November 12, were sparked by local outrage over what they see as Russia’s indirect colonization through the purchase of land and property.
Regional President Aslan Bzhania announced that the contentious legislation had been withdrawn from parliamentary discussions in response to the unrest.
