Olaf Scholz loses confidence vote and gears up for snap elections
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has lost his confidence vote and is now preparing for early elections scheduled for next February.
The leader expected to lose the vote but hopes to inject new momentum into his party, despite being projected to lose in the upcoming election.
This development comes after the collapse of the coalition government, formed by three different parties, two months ago, leaving Germany ungovernable without a majority.
Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party (SPD) is trailing in the polls, while the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Friedrich Merz, appears to be the voters' favorite.
In the vote, 207 SPD parliamentarians supported the chancellor, while 394 voted against him, and 116 abstained.
For the past several months, the German economy has stagnated as the West braces for a potential crisis.
