Melania goes head-to-head with Donald: did her statement decide presidential election?
Slovenian Melania Trump, wife of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, usually keeps a low profile when it comes to political views. But this week, Melania caused a shock wave among Trump and his supporters with a striking stance.
Melania Trump's book will be published next week, and in it she vehemently defends the right to abortion. “Why should anyone but the woman have the power to determine what she does with her body? A woman's fundamental right to individual freedom, to her own life, gives her the authority to terminate a pregnancy if she so desires.” That's according to the book “Melania,” to be released next week.
Husband Donald Trump and many of his fans do not agree at all with that statement by Melania. Indeed, the right to abortion has become a major political battleground in the US since the Supreme Court struck down the federal abortion law and made the states responsible for the issue. Republicans in charge immediately tightened the rules in their states. And Trump himself, who publicly seems to want to dodge the subject somewhat for fear of losing voters. In contrast, his deeply Christian running mate JD Vance and his supporters already think Trump should take a clearer stand against abortion. These extremist evangelicals, by the way, also believe that women should “walk in step with their husbands.”
But Trump's first lady is clear in her new book, “It is imperative that women have the autonomy to decide for themselves whether they want children, based on their own beliefs, independent of any government intervention or pressure.” And Melania goes even further: “Limiting a woman's right to end an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have believed this all my adult life.”
How will her husband react to this? Will he stay true to the Republican Party position, or will he choose to stand up for his wife?
