Haiti : United Nations concerned about high level of violence
At least 3,661 people have died since the start of the year in Haiti, where the country is ravaged by violence and living conditions are disastrous.
The United Nations has cited the failure of the local police as one of the causes of the violence, while gangs rule in the capital Port-au-Prince.
"No more lives should be lost as a result of this senseless criminality", said the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, in a statement.
According to the latest figures compiled by the organisation, at least 3,661 people have been killed in the country since January, a level of violence that has remained unchanged from the previous year.
"We are sounding the alarm. Illicit weapons continue to arrive in Haiti", said Ravina Shamdasani, a spokeswoman for the Office of the High Commissioner, at a press briefing.
According to the report, which covers the period from January to June, at least 860 people have lost their lives while 393 others have been injured during law enforcement operations. The UN demands that the fight against insecurity remain an "absolute priority".
"Weapons and ammunition continue to flow into the country, mainly from the United States, but also from the Dominican Republic and Jamaica", added Ravina Shamdasani.
