Germany is on the brink of collapse
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been urged not to represent his party, the SPD, in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February.
Weakened in recent months, Scholz may be replaced by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius as the SPD candidate. Germany has been governed by a three-party coalition since 2021, but Olaf Scholz's leadership appears increasingly tenuous.
A recent poll placed him last among the 20 most prominent political figures in terms of public support. The current chancellor is also projected to lose heavily to his CDU rival, Friedrich Merz, who has openly pledged substantial military aid to Ukraine, contrasting sharply with Olaf Scholz's more cautious approach.
Olaf Scholz has faced further criticism for a recent phone call with Vladimir Putin—their first contact in nearly two years. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Scholz of "opening Pandora’s box" by engaging with the Russian leader.
