Donald Trump no longer wants daylight saving time
Donald Trump's Republican party will try to abolish daylight saving time in the United States. The US president-elect shared that ambitious plan himself on his Truth Social network.
The 45th president of the US is not a big fan of daylight saving time. After all, Trump considers it “inconvenient and very costly to our nation”. Moving the clock forward one hour during the summer months to obtain longer evenings has been around in the United States since the 1960s. In fact, in Europe there has also been talk of a possible abolition of the summer hour for many years.
Arguments of proponents and opponents
Making daylight saving time permanent, according to those in favor, would increase economic activity during the winter months. But this economic benefit, could be accompanied by a major drawback for traffic safety. For example, school children would have to come to school in darkness, since the sun would not rise until an hour later. In turn, the annual transition to daylight saving time would cause sleep disruption and even health problems, according to some health professionals.
In fact, in March 2022, the U.S. Senate already voted unanimously to make daylight saving time permanent, but the legislation did not pass because a consensus could not be reached in the House of Representatives at the time.
