Italy to increase penalties for drunk driving
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government wants to make Italian traffic safer, so starting Saturday it is introducing some tougher penalties for traffic offenses.
Anyone caught using a smartphone behind the wheel will pay at least €250 from now on in Italy. Drivers caught again can be fined up to €1,400. Drunk driving will also be punished much more severely in Italy from now on. Anyone over the 0.5 promille alcohol limit now risks a fine of at least €2,200 and a six-month driving ban. And those with at least 1.5 promille could even face six months in jail. In an effort to reduce traffic fatalities, speeders are also being punished more severely and motorists must now keep 1.5 meters of distance when overtaking a cyclist.
