Farewell the humble paper boarding pass. It was nice knowing you
Low-cost airline Ryanair has announced plans to scrap paper boarding passes. From May 1, 2025, you’ll need to show your mobile app to board your flight.
This decision is intended to cut costs by eliminating ground staff at airports. The hope is to maintain competitive rates. Today, 60% of Ryanair passengers already use the mobile app to check in.
Boarding pass or app?
But what happens to the other 40%, or passengers whose smartphones run out of battery?
"If your battery is dead, we have your seat and passport and we can check you in at the boarding gates at the moment. Once we have the name and passport, that's fine, but everyone will be on the app," explains Michael O'Leary, CEO of Ryanair.
Users were already strongly encouraged to use the mobile application: a fee of 55 euros applies to check-in on site at the airport.
Ultimately, the company feels that everyone will readily adapt to the change. Other airlines will doubtless follow.
