Ukraine strikes Russian oil refinery in Rostov region

Ukraine launched an attack on Russian territory on Thursday using 13 missiles and 84 drones, igniting a fire at an oil refinery in the Rostov region, located in southern Russia.

As Russian forces continue to make gains in eastern Ukraine, Kyiv has adopted a strategy of long-range strikes targeting ammunition depots and refineries, which help fund Russia’s war effort.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, 84 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russia, including 36 over the Rostov region.

Rostov Governor Yuri Slyusar reported that Ukraine had hit the region with at least 13 missiles and dozens of drones, sparking a fire at the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery—a frequent target of Ukrainian attacks.

The specific missiles used by Ukraine in the strike remain unknown, but Kyiv may have employed U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles, as it did last month when targeting a Russian airbase.

The attack prompted an immediate response from Russia, which retaliated by deploying an Oreshnik hypersonic missile.
