Ukraine losing ground in Kursk region
Ukraine has lost more than 40 per cent of the territory it captured in August during a surprise invasion of Russia's Kursk region. This was reported by a senior source within the Ukrainian army to Reuters news agency.
According to the source, Russia has now deployed some 59,000 troops in the region to push back Ukrainian advances. Ukraine's invasion at the time caused chaos on the Russian side, which proved inadequately prepared after more than two years of large-scale military presence in Ukraine.
'At most, we controlled about 1,376 square kilometres (531 square miles)', the source explained. 'Now of course this territory is smaller. The enemy is increasing its counterattacks.'
