Sabotage: Putin wants to create chaos on global communications network
Russian spy ship Yantar, a Russian intelligence gathering vessel, has been spotted in the Irish Sea.
Two telecommunications cables have just been severed. For US intelligence officials, this was sabotage carried out by the Russians.
In the past, the Yantar's behavior was described as suspicious by the British and French navies.
In this respect, the statements of Nikolai Patrushev, Pourtine's special advisor, are illuminating:
“Russia firmly maintains its status as one of the world's leading naval powers, our adversaries should know that the Russian naval shield always protects our country.”
And he continues:
“New infrastructures could be attacked, in particular the maritime fiber optic cables that ensure communications throughout the world; the plan behind all this can be described in one word: chaos.”
According to a senior US official quoted by CNN:
“Russia is now more likely to carry out sabotage operations on the global communications network.”
