Putin will not lift a finger to help Syria
Russia has promised to supply weapons to Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, though some experts believe this potential aid will be insignificant.
Late last week, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the recent offensive by Syrian rebels represented a "violation of Syria’s sovereignty" and reiterated Russia’s commitment to "restoring order" in the country.
However, with Bashar al-Assad’s army having been driven out of Aleppo, the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War suggests that Moscow’s support is likely to be limited, as its primary focus remains on Ukraine.
"It remains unclear whether the Kremlin will be able to deploy additional assets to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime given the high tempo and operational requirements for Russia to continue conducting operations in Ukraine – the Kremlin’s priority theater," the ISW said in its report.
Following a four-year lull in fighting, Syrian rebels launched an offensive in Aleppo, recapturing the city within days after Assad’s forces retreated.
