Putin injects 135 billion dollars into his war economy
Russian President, Vladimir Putin, signed a decree on December 1 approving the 2025 federal budget and draft budgets for 2026-2027, with a focus on national security spending.
In 2024, Russia will significantly increase its defense budget spending, to about 28.3% of the budget. The 2024 defense budget represents a notable increase over previous years, indicating a shift in the government’s priorities toward military capabilities and readiness.
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the 2025 budget allocates about 41% of Russia’s annual spending to the defense and national security sectors.
This estimated $135 billion in spending exceeds spending on education, medicine, and social policy combined. At the same time, the cost of running Putin’s administration will increase by 25% and will cost $310 million.
