Putin fires 'hero of Russia'
Russia has fired 55-year-old Colonel General Gennady Anashkin. So report Russian military bloggers and Russian media.
The man was named a “hero of Russia” as recently as 2008 for his leadership of airborne troops during the five-day war between Russia and Georgia. That is the highest honorary title in Russia. But the now 55-year-old high-ranking commander allegedly produced false reports in which he lied about the progress of his troops in eastern Ukraine. Indeed, he allegedly exaggerated firmly about the progress of his troops around the city of Siversk, in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. And that has since cost him his job in the Russian military. Officially, the Russian defense ministry has not yet responded to the dismissal.
