Happy Putin sees troops progressing at high speed
Vladimir Putin’s forces have not captured territory as quickly as they are now since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022.
However, it would still take at least a year for the Kremlin to fully capture the Donetsk region, which remains one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's primary objectives.
According to figures from the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War, Russian soldiers gained 22 square kilometers per day throughout November. Russian forces have made rapid advances toward Kupiansk in the northeast of the Kharkiv region and around Khurakove in the southern Donbas.
The Institute for the Study of War notes that Russian troops are heavily targeting Ukraine’s most fortified strongholds, which is slowing their overall progress.
Last week, the U.S. and the U.K. authorized Ukraine to use their long-range missiles against targets on Russian soil, but only within the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces maintain partial control over the border area.
Following these attacks, Russia responded with an intercontinental ballistic missile strike and has threatened to deploy more of them in the future.
