Ashamed, Vladimir Putin wants to hide the numbers
Vladimir Putin has signed a federal law banning any census of the Russian population.
According to multiple sources, this move is intended to conceal the demographic impact the local population has suffered due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has lasted for more than two years and resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides.
A report by independent media outlet Mediazona and BBC News Russian, released on September 27, revealed that over 71,000 Russian men have been killed in combat—an increase of nearly 2,000 deaths since mid-September.
The legislation, which will remain in effect until 2029, now prohibits population surveys and the collection of demographic statistics.
It is unclear if Russia will take further steps in this direction before 2029.
