Nissan and Honda to begin negotiations over future merger
Japanese automotive giants Nissan Motor and Honda Motor are expected to begin negotiations soon for a merger, creating a new entity powerful enough to compete with Tesla in the electric vehicle market.
According to the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, the two automakers aim to operate under a new joint entity and are expected to sign an agreement to that effect.
Honda and Nissan are also considering including Mitsubishi Motors in the merger, with Nissan currently the primary shareholder in Mitsubishi.
As early as last March, the two companies had already announced their intention to collaborate on developing a new strategy for electric vehicles.
According to experts, this decision aims to close the gap with Chinese companies, which now offer high-performing electric vehicles at lower prices than Tesla models.
Japanese automakers, who were initially ahead with their hybrid models, have focused their efforts on developing new hybrid vehicles rather than fully electric cars.
