Kim Jong Un: His crazy project
Kim Jong Un has unveiled his first resort complex, aiming to attract a large number of both local and international tourists.
Located on the country's east coast, the hotel was built on a former missile launch site. However, construction was delayed due to the pandemic and the presence of homeless people who occupied the site during the workers' absence.
The resort is set to officially open in May 2025, though it remains to be seen if it will meet the expectations of local authorities.
Jacob Bogle, a North Korea expert, discussed this unusual project with the Daily Star.
"The Wonsan resort is the largest recreational complex in North Korea and is one of the largest single-operator beach resorts in the world in terms of length. Initial plans unveiled back in 2013 suggested that the resort could host as many as 100,000 guests at once," he said.
"Given that only between 150,000 to 200,000 foreign tourists visited the country annually before the pandemic, Wonsan would heavily depend on domestic tourism to reach capacity," he added.
According to the expert, the majority of tourists will likely come from Russia and China.
