Amazon employees threaten to go on strike during holidays
Thousands of Amazon employees are threatening to go on strike if the American company refuses to allow the establishment of a union.
The strike threats began in New York before spreading to Chicago and then Atlanta. These strikes, which would coincide with the holiday season, could lead to significant financial losses as last-minute Christmas purchases need to be delivered on time.
Workers at the JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island were the first to win a vote to unionize in March 2022. However, no contract has been negotiated since, as employees continue to demand better wages and improved job protections.
Workers at two Amazon sites near Atlanta, Georgia, and a delivery site in Skokie, Illinois, near Chicago, have also voted to authorize a strike and have joined their New York colleagues in protests.
This strike follows the release of a report on December 16 by the U.S. Senate’s Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, which highlighted the high rates of workplace accidents at Amazon.
