'Minimum age for social media will be decided this year'
Children and adolescents are increasingly glued to a screen instead of experiencing real life outdoors. This has dramatic effects on their mental health, motor skills and physical preparedness. So in Australia, they really want to do something about it.
Australia plans to set a minimum age of 14 to 16 for social networking. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese explains the idea, “I want kids to let go of their devices and head to soccer fields, swimming pools and tennis courts.” On his own social media, Albanese shared a video about his idea. The federal law setting the minimum age will take effect as early as 2024.
“We want them to have real experiences, with real people, because we know that social media damages society,” Albanese told public broadcaster ABC. The law would make Australia one of the 1st countries in the world with an age restriction on social media.
