Xi Jinping still aims to annex Taiwan
In a speech marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping reiterated his intention to reunify China with Taiwan.
Speaking before 3,000 members of the Chinese Communist Party, the leader outlined his vision for the nation, warning that the future may not always be bright.
The president, who has been in power since 2012, used the occasion to reaffirm his desire to annex Taiwan, asserting that the island is a province that rightfully belongs to China.
"Taiwan is China's sacred territory, and the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are bound by blood—blood is thicker than water," he declared, adding, "No one can stop the wheel of history."
Beijing has never ruled out the possibility of taking back its neighbour by force and has maintained a hostile stance toward Taiwanese separatists, especially its current leaders.
In response to China’s threats, Taiwan has bolstered its defenses against potential air or sea offensives. The island nation also relies on support from the United States, its main arms supplier.
