Will patriot missiles protect Antwerp port?
The mayor of Antwerp advocates installing anti-aircraft defences to protect the port of Antwerp.
After all, Bart De Wever (N-VA) fears that the war in Ukraine could come closer to home. ‘Of course I hope it will end as soon as possible, but I think we should also be resilient in Antwerp,’ De Wever said in an interview with Gazet van Antwerpen on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the city's liberation. ‘That is why I am pushing for more money for defence and the deployment of anti-aircraft defences, such as Patriots around the port of Antwerp. I proposed that a few years ago, but it was met with jeers then and I was declared as almost a fool. Who is laughing now?’
In Belgium's neighbouring countries, important ports do have already anti-aircraft defences, like the Dutch with Patriots and the French with their Mambas.
