"There is no possibility for Ukraine to join NATO" : Hungary shuts the door
Hungary’s Foreign Minister has warned that Ukraine joining NATO would spark a third World War.
During a press briefing after a meeting with Serbia as part of a joint economic commission, Péter Szijjártó argued that Ukraine’s entry into the military alliance would automatically lead to global conflict, citing Article 5 of NATO.
This clause states that if a member country is attacked, it is considered an attack on the entire organization, which must then respond collectively.
"I think that anyone with common sense who thinks this through does not want to create this danger. So the Hungarian position is clear: There is no possibility for Ukraine to join NATO", said Péter Szijjártó.
Ukraine submitted its application in September 2022, seven months after the war with Russia began. While the majority of NATO member countries support Ukraine’s membership, some nations, including Hungary and Slovakia, are firmly opposed.
Mark Rutte, NATO’s new Secretary General, said last week that Ukraine has "never been closer" to joining the alliance.
