'Russian cyber attacks will not affect elections Sunday'

Next weekend local elections will be held in Belgium. Hackers already tried to throw a spanner in the works in the last straight line towards the voting booth. But the damage remains limited, the Belgian prime minister reassured Tuesday afternoon.

The cyber attacks in recent days against several Belgian websites could in no way interfere with Sunday's local elections, according to the Center for Cyber Security (CCB). Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said so in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. A number of Belgian government websites were temporarily unavailable. The Belgian prime minister stated that the attacks only caused a relatively limited level of inconvenience and that Belgium is among the world leaders in terms of cyber security.

“The analysis of the CCB is that we have weathered the attacks of the past few days well,” the prime minister replied to questions from five political groups about the Russian cyber attacks of the past two days.
