More passport checks at German borders in fight against immigration and extremism
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wants more temporary border controls at all of Germany's land borders to tackle illegal migration and protect against Islamist extremism.
The measures will be communicated to the European Commission and come after consultations with the opposition CDU party. The move follows concerns in society about migration, particularly after a deadly knife attack by a Syrian asylum seeker in Solingen.
The announcement coincides with the recent success of the anti-immigration party AfD in the state elections and the upcoming elections in Brandenburg, where the Social Democrats, the party to which Faeser belongs, face challenges.
