‘No arrest, but a guard of honour for Putin’
The Russian president is currently in Mongolia for an official state visit. Vladimir Putin was immediately warmly welcomed there. And that was perhaps a relief for the Kremlin after all?
Vladimir Putin is visiting Mongolia and this Central Asian country is a member of the ICC (International Criminal Court). Consequently, it is therefore obliged to arrest him under an ICC arrest warrant issued in March. But it does not look like this is going to happen. Even though Mongolia has signed and ratified the Rome Statute to become a member of the ICC. According to that Statute, Mongolia must arrest anyone entering its territory against whom an ICC warrant has been issued. But the Russian leader's welcome in advance suggests that it will not arrest him. On the contrary, Putin was even given a guard of honour at the airport.
Putin is in Mongolia to attend the commemoration of the 1939 Battle of Chalkhin Gol.
Putin was also invited to the inauguration of new Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum on 1 October. Mexico is also a member of the ICC, but current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador has also already indicated that Putin will not be arrested when he arrives in the country.
