Kremlin at ease: Putin will not be arrested in Mongolia
Vladimir Putin's visiting Mongolia. The Central Asian country is a member of the ICC (International Criminal Court). It's therefore obliged to arrest him under an ICC arrest warrant.
Will Mongolia choose loyalty to the ICC or to Vladimir Putin? The Kremlin leader will visit the country on September 3 despite an arrest warrant issued against him by the ICC in March 2023. However, Mongolia has signed and ratified the Rome Statute to become a member. According to the statutes, this state must therefore arrest any person under an ICC arrest warrant who enters its territory. Putin therefore risks arrest once he sets foot on Mongolian soil to attend the commemoration of the Battle of Khalkhin Gol in 1939. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, however, indicates that he has “no concerns” by referring to an “excellent dialogue” with their “Mongolian friends”. Ulan Bator has therefore clearly chosen to defy a decision by the ICC.
