"He's a crook, a sick man, a monster"
Robert De Niro hasn't always had a political conscience, but with the return of Donald Trump, the actor wants to take a stand against what he sees as a danger to American democracy.
In an interview with MSNBC, Robert De Niro said:
"This guy is a crook and he's gotten away with it for years, he's sick, a sick person who somehow got allowed into our system, he just can't get anywhere near the presidency."
Yet during his first term, the actor had hope:
"It's funny, when he became president I thought he could have done good things, instead he did everything badly, with his narcissistic and self-centered side."
The message to voters about to cast their ballots is clear:
"I don’t think that the people who are voting for him understand how dangerous he’s going to be if he becomes president again."
"Historically, you can compare it to Germany, with Hitler, they don’t take him seriously, he looks like a clown and acts like a clown, but these guys look like clowns and somehow they bring us closer to chaos than we can imagine."
He sees Trump as a real danger to American democracy.
“I keep saying that democracy is great, of course, but people take democracy for granted, but...
...this guy is a monster, more than a monster, it’s almost like he wants to do the most horrible things to make fun of us.”
