European Parliament wants to give Zelensky carte blanche, Italians vote against
The European Parliament is calling on EU member states to immediately lift restrictions imposed on Ukraine for the use of supplied weapons.
The European Parliament believes that Ukraine should be able to use the weapons against "legitimate military targets" on Russian territory. The parliamentary statement was drawn up by a broad coalition of parties and was adopted on Wednesday with 377 votes in favor and 191 votes against. Many of the dissenters were Italians. Italy is one of the countries that wants to continue to impose restrictions and instructions for use on arms deliveries to Ukraine.
In practice, however, each EU country can still decide for itself under what conditions and whether it wants to supply weapons to Ukraine. The European Parliament's statement is actually no more than a clear signal, because it has no say in the defense of EU member states.
