Attempted assassination of Trump on golf course: here's what we already know

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump appears to have escaped another assassination attempt. The FBI is investigating the suspected assassination attempt. We share with you the information already published by US authorities and press on the ground.

Sunday after noon, shots were fired at the golf club near West Palm Beach where Donald Trump was playing golf at the time. Trump was not injured and was quickly moved to safety. The perpetrator fled but could be caught not much later.

The events took place at the Trump International Golf Course West Palm Beach. The suspected perpetrator was said to be a 58-year-old construction worker who had been arrested several times for minor offenses. It was a Secret Service agent who had noticed the man because he was acting suspiciously. Indeed, he had spotted the barrel of a gun through the fence.

The gunman was 300 to 500 yards from Trump, an official told CNN. The officer allegedly fired several shots. The suspect then dropped his gun, ran to his car and fled.

Police at the scene found an AK-47-style rifle with a sight, two backpacks and a GoPro camera in the bushes where the suspect was seen, the Palm Beach County sheriff's office said. Inside the backpacks were ceramic tiles. It is possible the suspect wanted to use them as armor.
