"A dark day for Germany is a dark day for Europe"
Sunday's election victory of the far-right AfD party in Thuringia's state elections provoked a lot of reactions.
In Thuringia, a state in the former GDR, the AfD gained about 33 per cent of the vote. For the first time since World War II, a far-right party won the election.
"A dark day for Germany is a dark day for Europe," tweeted Valérie Hayer, MEP for Renaissance, French President Macron's party, and member of the liberal group Renew Europe in the European Parliament.
"The election result in Thuringia and Saxony is unprecedented," she continued. "We shall not let Europe give in to racist, antisemitic, misogynist and homophobic movements. We shall more than ever stand up for our democratic values. They are never forever granted."
