Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door” voted most-anticipated European film
Following the Venice Film Festival and before the circuit that includes Toronto and Berlin, Cineuropa has lined up the European films that are most anticipated for the winter season of 2024. Top among these is Pedro Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door”.
The story follows two women, Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton). They were once close friends in their youth when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid became an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter – two radically different life paths. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation.
Again, Almodovar has chosen a tale of two women, played by powerful actresses. It was written by Almodovar and novelist Sigrid Nunez (based on her book What Are You Going Through). As this is Almodovar’s first feature in English (although he has directed two English shorts), there is a lot of expectation about his film which, like his previous works, was produced by the director’s brother Agusto. The soundtrack is by longtime Almodovar collaborator Alberto Iglesias Fernández-Berridi.
“The Room Next Door” premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival. It is scheduled to be released theatrically in Spain in October 2024, followed by the rest of Europe and the US in December 2024.
