Porsche wants to make the 6-stroke engine dance
The internal combustion engine is not inert despite its announced "death". While developing electric engines, Porsche continues to work on thermal engines. It has just imagined a 6-stroke engine.
Porsche has filed a patent application for a 6-stroke internal combustion engine. Car engines generally operate on 4 strokes: intake, compression, combustion, exhaust. Despite technological improvements, direct injection and computers, there's still room for improvement. For example, by adding 2 strokes. This is Porsche's idea. Thus, its engineers have succeeded in adding a second compression for a new combustion after the first explosion.
Better efficiency
To achieve this sleight of hand, the pistons and crankshaft have been redesigned to adjust the high and low positions according to the time in the cycle. The 6-stroke thus provides a power gain. However, the goal of this innovation is to improve combustion by better exploiting the air volume to reduce emissions. This engine is compatible with synthetic fuels.
