Europe wants to ban popular helmet type
Spain has already done so and the European Commission wants to push other European Union countries to ban a type of helmet that is very popular with scooter riders: the open face helmet.
The open face helmet is a helmet without chin protection. It is different from the full-face helmet that covers the entire head. Most motorcyclists opt for the full-face helmet or the modular full-face helmet. However, there is nothing to prevent the use of the open face helmet, which is particularly popular with scooter riders, moped riders and vintage bikers, especially when it is hot. However, this type of helmet will be banned in Spain in 2025, even for foreign users of motorized two-wheelers.
Serious injuries
The European Commission has even recommended that EU Member States legislate on the matter, following Spain's example. Quite simply because the open face helmet doesn't protect the jaw and can cause serious injuries, even after a fall from a scooter. However, it's a habits of a majority of scooter and Vespa drivers. Motorcycle users, on the other hand, are largely fans of full-face helmets.
European ban
The jet helmet is even more successful in hot countries such as Italy or Greece. It even participates in popular culture. Banning it throughout Europe as done in Spain is not yet on the agenda. It's even a challenge. But it could happen if the Commission manages to impose its recommendation to make it a ban (almost) everywhere in Europe.
