Tsunami warning in Japan: “please do not enter the sea”

On Monday evening, after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck southwest Japan, the authorities issued a tsunami warning.

Following the earthquake, which struck off the coast of Miyazaki at around 9:19pm (12:19 GMT), one-meter waves were widely feared. The US Geophysical Survey (USGS) has since declared that “there's no tsunami threat from this earthquake”. Nevertheless, Japan's meteorological agency has urged the population to stay away from coastal areas. “The tsunami may strike several times. Please do not enter the sea and stay away from coastal areas,” it said on X (formerly Twitter).

As the agency points out, two small tsunamis of around20 cm were detected in two ports in the region. So far, no injuries have been reported by the Japanese media.
