Already 73 percent less wildlife since 1970

Our nature is disappearing at an alarming rate. This is what WWF warns about in the Living Planet Report, a large report containing data from a great deal of fieldwork around the world.

The results of the report, published every 2 years, are dramatic for nature. Monitored wildlife populations shrank by an average of 73 percent between 1970 and 2020. In Latin America and the Caribbean, it went as high as 95 percent, the World Wildlife Fund WWF reports. And this, of course, has major implications for humans, WWF stresses. When wildlife disappears, it means that nature disappears on our earth. The more biodiversity and nature disappear, the worse for humans. After all, nature provides us with clean water, clean air, food and medicine, among other things. It stores carbon for us, hugely important in the fight against global warming. “Indicators show that nature is disappearing at an alarming rate,” warns the WWF. “The risk of extinction is increasing and healthy ecosystems may be lost.”
