Cunning thieves at self-service checkouts
In 2023, at the well known supermarket chain Jumbo, more was stolen than earned, with many customers appearing not to be honest at the self-scan checkouts.
Last year, Jumbo embezzled a hundred million euros worth of groceries, more than the profit made. In other words: if everyone were honest, Jumbo could have earned more than twice as much money. This is what Het Nieuwsblad writes based on figures published by Jumbo itself. A third of the thefts took place at Jumbo's self-scan checkouts.
Self-scanning is rapidly gaining popularity in almost all supermarkets, but it now appears that there is a major disadvantage associated with it. Nevertheless, many supermarkets decide that they want to take the risk of theft with self-scan checkouts, as a lot of costs are saved by not using an extra cashier.
